Job Purpose

Canberra Veterinary Emergency Service and Small Friends Vet

CVES has partnered with a local GP practice, Small Friends Vet, to create an exciting opportunity for a keen new graduate to develop their skills in the best of both worlds – emergency and critical care AND general practice.

  • Up to 38 hours per week (Up to 19 hours with each practice per week)
  • Remuneration based on experience and qualifications – paid separately by each clinic
  • Generous CPD allowance
  • Supportive and happy work environments
  • Diverse and challenging case loads
  • Support from mentors: Fellows in ECC, Members in Internal Medicine
  • Great location – Come and see why people move to Canberra and never leave, not to mention we are 2 hours to the ocean and ski hills, and only a few hours’ drive to Sydney and Melbourne

Canberra Veterinary Emergency Service is an after-hours service operating weeknights from 6pm to 8am and 24 hours on weekends and public holidays. Our practice is a purpose-built facility that offers state of the art equipment to work up the most difficult of cases and we provide ample support in those difficult cases so you can always bounce ideas off someone either on the floor or a phone call away.

Small Friends Vet is a much-loved small animal general practice. We see educated and motivated clients who want the very best for their pets. As a respected member of our friendly team, you will have the opportunity to develop a close working relationship with our loyal clients and their small friends, whilst being encouraged to work up cases and take them through from initial presentation to resolution. Each day you will be supported and mentored through an interesting mix of consulting, treatment and surgical responsibilities.

This amazing opportunity will offer two full days of work at both practices. Our rosters will complement each other to ensure a healthy work life balance for you and a well-rested, engaged, and stimulated employee for us!

Canberra is a hidden gem, with an abundant number of things to do all within minutes from your home. For the outdoor enthusiast, there is hiking, camping, mountain bike riding and horse riding available within 30 minutes of your home with skiing and surfing only a short drive away so you can leave your house in the morning, spend the day at the beach or on the ski slopes and still be home for dinner. For the refined, sophisticated person, there are art galleries, theatres and museums. For the family person, there are numerous parklands, kids’ playgrounds, swimming holes and bike tracks. For the socialite, Canberra offers ample nightlife and restaurants and Sydney and Melbourne are a close enough drive to attend concerts or other major events. Canberra is a well thought out, progressive, modern city that is large enough to have that big city feel with all the amenities and shops you would expect yet is small enough that you aren’t stuck in traffic for hours.

About CVES:

We have a team of vets all from diverse backgrounds, from large animal to those with 20 years’ experience in ECC. Our nursing team are highly trained and work seamlessly alongside the vets as our second pair of arms and eyes on the floor. We are a cohesive, supportive team who help each other out and ensure the best outcome for our patients by keeping up to date with the most recent literature, attending conferences, ensuring access to new medications and diagnostics, continuing education with in-house tutorials. We care about the members of our team, about the direction of their career progression, about managing their fatigue levels and about ensuring we all have a good work life balance, so our job is rewarding and compliments our home life.

We like toys and have almost all the bells and whistles, from digital imaging and ultrasound to comprehensive blood machines including blood gases and APTT/PT. We have ventilators, multiparameter monitors, active heating devices and almost everything in between. The building has 9 consulting rooms, 2 surgical theatres and a separate cat ward. The treatment room is extensive with three treatment benches, oxygen cages and heated cages, large dog runs and multiple cage space to monitor patients carefully.

About Small Friends Vet:

We are a positive, kind, and happy environment with a qualified and professional team, all of whom truly enjoy their work, with a caring boss whose priority is always his staff. We have a very low staff turnover – tangible proof of a truly happy workplace – and happy, well supported, and supportive nurses who make a vet’s job a dream!
You will work in a small, very clean and modern veterinary hospital with a dedicated surgical theatre, digital x-ray and ultrasound and in-house pathology suite. We want to assist you to gain confidence, learn new skills and to share with you our love of the veterinary profession. Our performance appraisals are all about you gaining confidence and us being able to provide the right support, not about us filling the coffers – we will never set consultation charge targets. We encourage, and our clients expect, a sound, scientific and sensible approach to all cases.
